Aberdeenshire, Balmoral Castle & The Northeast Coast: 2 Days from Edinburgh
V&A Dundee, the cliff-top ruins of Dunnottar Castle and the royal Highland home at Balmoral, with a night in the Granite City, with Drive Me Wild Scotland.
Lallybroch, Castle Leoch, Cranesmuir and more. Walk through real Outlander filming locations with Drive Me Wild Scotland.
If you have ever wanted to step into Jamie and Claire’s world, this is the day for it. We visit real filming locations around Edinburgh: three castles, a royal palace and a beautifully preserved 16th-century village. Along the way your driver-guide shares the history behind the places and the stories behind the show, so the day works for devoted fans and curious first-timers alike. We keep vehicles small and the pace relaxed, so you have time to explore, take photos and soak in each location.
Morning: Edinburgh to Midhope Castle, West Lothian
We leave Edinburgh and begin the Outlander trail at Midhope Castle, the Fraser family home known as Lallybroch in the show. The castle ruins can’t be entered, but you can sit on the famous steps and picture Jamie or Claire coming through the courtyard archway.
Please note: Midhope Castle closes for winter. [Add your own winter closure note.]
Mid-morning: Blackness Castle, West Lothian
Next we drive through pleasant countryside to Blackness Castle, nicknamed “the ship that never sailed” because its shape resembles a stone vessel. Walk the ramparts of the fortress used as Fort William and Captain Randall’s headquarters in the series, or stroll the shore for views over the Firth of Forth.
Afternoon: Linlithgow, Doune and Culross
At Linlithgow you have free time for lunch, a wander through the town or a walk around the loch. Its palace is the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots and appears in the show as Wentworth Prison. We then continue to Doune Castle, Castle Leoch in Outlander and one of Scotland’s best-preserved medieval castles (also seen in Monty Python and the Holy Grail), where you can take the audio guide or walk by the river. Our last stop is Culross, an almost unchanged 16th-century village that stands in for Cranesmuir. Visit Claire’s herb garden, explore the palace or wander the old streets.
Evening: Culross to Edinburgh
We say goodbye to the filming locations and head home through Fife, crossing the Firth of Forth by the Queensferry Crossing with views of the Forth Rail Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We arrive in Edinburgh at approximately 5:45pm.
Note: the running order of stops can vary.

Our driver-guide was exceptional! Travelling in a small executive group meant we could pull in at secluded Highland viewpoints the big 50-seater coaches couldn't reach. The local folklore through Glencoe made Scotland truly come alive.
A truly five-star experience from start to finish. The pace was relaxed and unhurried with ample time for photographs, lochside walks, and an authentic village lunch. Drive Me Wild Scotland exceeded every expectation!
First time exploring Scotland, and this tour made the whole trip unforgettable. Having an authentic Scottish driver-guide sharing personal stories and deep clan history made every mile fascinating. Spotless Mercedes mini-coach!
